DAY 10

The Ancestors of Jesus

The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.  Matthew 1:1

Jesus is God. We know that, right? But let’s not forget that Jesus was also a man. Jesus had parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, and probably at least one crazy uncle. Ancestry was very important to Jewish people in the time of Jesus. The beginning of Matthew carries special significance because it establishes Jesus as the direct descendant of David and the direct descendant of Abraham. David and Abraham were two very important figures in the history of Israel, and this fact helps establish Jesus as the One who would come to save God’s people.

Here are two questions to reflect on and discuss as a family or on your own:

  1. What is significant about God sending Jesus in human form?

  2. What kind of history is present in your ancestry, and how does that affect your walk with Jesus today?

Pray: “God, You are so good! Thank You for being humble enough to send Jesus to earth as a human being, just like me. Help me to look to Your son as a model for how to live, love, and walk with You. Lead me today to tell others about the incredible life of Jesus.”

As a Family: Work with your children to draw out a family tree and point out the significance of your ancestry. Refer back in your Bible to Genesis & 1-2 Samuel and tell your children stories about the lives of Abraham and David.
