The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. John 10:10
Think of “life” as a fill-in word for everything that is good and pleasing to God. You see, Jesus’ birth and death took place so that we might abound in a life that brings Him glory. When our hearts are filled with the abundant life of Jesus, anxiety turns into abundant peace, fear turns into abundant faith, and despair becomes abundant joy.
Here are two questions to reflect on and discuss as a family or on your own:
- What aspects of God’s ways and will are lacking in your life?
- How would you define abundant life? Does your definition match Jesus’ definition? (Jesus’ definition: abundant life is fullness in the things that are good and pleasing to God, e.g., love, joy, peace, patience, humility, faith).
Pray: “Generous Father, I bless your name for sending Your Son to lay aside the abundance of heaven so that I could lay hold of abundant life in You. May the life You lived through Jesus abound in me today.”
As a family: The word “abundant” means to be filled to the point of overflow. Demonstrate this idea by using a cup that is filled to the brim (maybe even let it spill over!) with clean water and one that is completely empty. Let the full cup represent a life abounding with Jesus. Let the empty cup represent a life that lacks the abundant life that only Jesus can bring.
