Breaking: The Biggest News Ever!

And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.  And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” Luke 2:8-12

Jesus is here! Imagine what the shepherds were feeling: fear, excitement, amazement. Imagine how fast their hearts were beating. Did they look at each other like, “Is this happening?” or were they frozen and speechless? Just think: angels were announcing the biggest news of all time to them!

Here are two questions to reflect on and discuss as a family or on your own:

  1. What would you have thought and felt if you were standing in the field that night, as angels with “the glory of the Lord” shining around them announced this message to you?

  2. Almost every time an angel appears in the Bible, their first words are “fear not.” Why do you think that is?

Pray: “God, You are so glorious. Help me be awestruck as I think about this story that I have heard so many times.”

As a Family: Act it out. Assign each family member a role. Someone can be the angel; others the shepherds; you can even have a few sheep! Reread Luke 2:8-12 and let everyone play their part.
