How Do I Explain an Invisible God to my Child?

How Do I Explain an Invisible God to my Child?

God is Spirit. He’s real and we, as Christians, have a personal relationship with Him, even though we cannot see Him. These realities present challenges when parenting our kids, because they think literally.

Recently, my 5-year-old daughter asked, “I can’t see God, so how do we know He’s real?” (which is a terrifying question for your daughter to ask, right?)

Thankfully, John 3 addresses that very subject. In John 3:8, Jesus says, “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

My daughter is at the age now where she can think through things a little bit but needs very simple and clear ideas, so I asked her, “Can you see the wind?” She said no. I replied, “Well, if you can’t see the wind, how do you know there’s wind and that it is real?”

She thought for a minute, then said, “You can see the leaves moving.” I said, “Yes! Exactly. You can’t see the wind, but you can see what the wind is doing and where it’s going, and it’s similar with God.” This is the point that Jesus is making in John 3, hopefully made in a way for a young child to understand.

Maybe this article will help you if your child asks a similar question, or maybe you could bring it up to teach them a new idea. Either way, it’s on us parents to teach our kids that God is Spirit and that He is active in our lives.
